Canadian tunneller earns international recognition

Canadian Michael Mains has won the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association’s (ITA) Young Tunneller Award.

Mains, a senior design lead for tunnels and underground projects at AECOM, began his career performing project management, analysis, design and construction supervision across the transportation, water, and building sectors.

Originally from Whistler, B.C., his passion for tunnelling has led him to work on some of the biggest projects in the world across four different countries before bringing his global experience back home to Canada.

International Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards are designed to recognize the most ground-breaking innovation and outstanding projects in tunnelling and underground construction. Due to the recent global pandemic, the 2021 ceremonies were held online through a dedicated platform. Awards were presented in seven categories.

The ITA is based in Switzerland. Founded in 1974, it currently counts 78 member nations and 266 corporate or individual affiliate members.
